craters Mars

List of named Martian craters.

It contains some of hundreds of thousands of impact craters on Mars that have their own names.

Martian craters have names derived from well-known scientists and science fiction authors, or if they are less than 60 km in diameter, they have received the names of cities on Earth. The large impact basins Hellas, Argyre and Isidis Planitia, which do not have the morphology typical of impact craters, are not included in this list.

Mars is the fourth planet from the sun and the second smallest planet in the solar system. It is named after the Roman god of war Mars and is sometimes referred to as the "red planet" because of its reddish appearance. The red color is due to large amounts of iron oxide (rust) distributed over the surface and in the atmosphere. Mars is one of the four rock planets and has a thin atmosphere consisting mostly of carbon dioxide. The surface is covered with craters of different sizes similar to the moon, but Mars, like Earth, also has many volcanoes, valleys, vast plains and ice plots at the poles.
